ANSI Z97.1 - Impact resistant glass and mirror - Category I / II

We came across a job that required the client asked for the mirror to be specified to a certain standard by the American National Standards Institute to be rated for impact resistance. So Art Effects did a little homework for our client and found a coating that could be applied to the back of mirrors or glass that meets that ANSI standard.

An excerpt of this standard reads:

"ANSI Z97.1 has adopted three separate impact categories or classes, based upon impact
performance. ANSI Z97.1’s Class A glazing materials are comparable to the CPSC’s Category
II glazing materials, passing a 48-inch drop height test, and its Class B glazing materials are
comparable to the CPSC’s Category I glazing materials, passing the 18-inch drop height test.
ANSI Z97.1 also has a product-specific Class C impact test, a 12-inch drop height test,
applicable only for fire-resistant glazing materials.
"

Our drop test of the video below shows a drop height of 61" and a 4 pound object which exceeds the ANSI standard for drop testing. Do not try this at home.

ISPM-15 / IPPC Exportable Crates     www.ippc.int

A client approached us about making wooden crates that could be used for exporting artwork into other countries. We did some digging out there in our vast array of resources and came up with a solution to the clients request. This IPPC standard reads:

2. Regulated Wood Packaging Material

These guidelines are for coniferous and non-coniferous raw wood packaging material that may serve as a pathway for plant pests posing a threat mainly to living trees. They cover wood packaging material such as pallets, dunnage, crating, packing blocks, drums, cases, load boards, pallet collars, and skids which can be present in almost any imported consignment, including consignments which would not normally be the target of phytosanitary inspection.

Wood packaging made wholly of wood-based products such as plywood, particle board, oriented strand board or veneer that have been created using glue, heat and pressure or a combination thereof should be considered sufficiently processed to have eliminated the risk associated with the raw wood. It is unlikely to be infested by raw wood pests during its use and therefore should not be regulated for these pests.

Wood packaging material such as veneer peeler cores1, sawdust, wood wool, and shavings, and raw wood cut into thin pieces may not be pathways for introduction of quarantine pests and should not be regulated unless technically justified.
